Halloween Book Tag

Guys! Halloween is almost here! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Have you figured out what/who you’re going to be this Halloween? Let me know! I’m going to be a nurse from Silent Hill (I cosplayed it at a recent convention and everyone loved it. I took pictures with about 30 people!)

This week I’m doing the Halloween Book tag! As always, I wasn’t tagged by anyone and I’m tagging everyone who is reading this! I found the tag through this blogger!

1.) Favorite Scary (Must Read) For Halloween?

Anna Dressed in Blood is probably the scariest book I’ve read. I honestly can’t read too many scary books because they stick with me.

anna-dressed-in-blood

2.) Scariest Book Cover, Like Ever?

I don’t even know, I don’t read horror too often, but the Miss. Peregrine books always kind of creeped me out. I have yet to read them though.

pergrine.jpg

3.) If You Could Go Trick-or-Treating With Any Author, Who Would You Pick?

Probably Lance Rubin, author of Denton Little’s Deathdate because he seems super cool and wrote a book about knowing when you’re going to die and I just want to chat about how awesome the cover is.

4.) If You Could Dress Up As Any Bookish Character For Halloween, Who Would You Be?

Claire Fraser from Outlander, all of her dresses are so cool and I love her present day attire too!

5.) If You Could Find Anything (From Any Book) In Your Trick-or-Treat Stash, What Would You Hope To Find?

Possibly money, what book possesses unlimited money so I can get out of debt?

tumblr_m73j5tzzoo1r89qoso1_500.gif

6.) In What Fictional World Would You Like To Go Trick-or-Treating?

The world of Harry Potter would probably have a really awesome Halloween! All of the strange wizard goodies you would receive!

7.) What Book Villain Would You Not Like To Meet Alone In A Dark Alley On Halloween?

President Snow from The Hunger Games possibly. I’m not fond of his personality.

8.) Would You Rather Dress Up As A Vampire, Zombie, Werewolf, or Shadowhunter?

Vampire, hands down.

9.) Pick A Candy (Just One) From Harry Potter That You Would Love To Find In Your Stash?

Anything but the jelly beans! Gross! The chocolate frogs always looked yummy…as long as they don’t hop off…

10.) What Is Your Favorite Halloween Candy?

KitKats or Milky Ways. I’m a chocolate addict.

Halloween/Scary Movies to watch before October ends!

Halloween is upon us! Check out my movie recommendations, and yes, I have watched all these this month or plan on re-watching them!

Trick r’ Treat

Believe it or not, I just watched this movie for the first time the other day. I don’t think it was as good of a horror movie as it could have been, but there were some really good parts! It shares multiple stories in one movie about people going back on Halloween traditions and not respecting the holiday. You’ll see a ton of 90’s/00’s movie/tv stars you loved.

Scare factor: 7/10 For some frightening imagery and some gore.

tumblr_nd98919mdu1rp0vkjo1_500

Sinister (1&2)

The first Sinister is probably the scariest movie I’ve ever watched. The first time, I didn’t get to sleep until 7 am the next morning because I was so afraid. I even names one of my cats after Mr. Boogie! He possesses children and they end up killing their family, they record the murders on 8mm film and replay them, all you hear in the background is the film spinning, no music. The second one isn’t as scary because you’re seeing it from the child’s POV and not the parents.

Scare factor: 10/10 I can’t re-watch the first one because it scared me so much.

Cabin in the Woods

This movie is my favorite ‘cabin in the woods’ movie where, of course, a bunch of college kids head out to a cabin in the woods and hell is unleashed upon them. I like this movie because of the funny stoner that knows they shouldn’t be there doing the things they’re doing but no one listens to him. But wait! Ah, this cabin in the woods movie has a BIG  plot twist, and I think my other horror friends are going to love it if they give it a try!

Scare factor: 5/10 The humor and plot twist, makes this not so scary.

tumblr_mt6pr2qbbw1sq7im4o1_500

Tucker & Dale VS Evil

My husband introduced me to this movie about two backwoods hillbillies who are minding their own business when a group of teens stumble upon their house. It’s more of a comedy than a scary movie, but it does have some gruesome scenes. This is a movie you can watch with the lights off and not worry about what goes bump in the night.

Scare factor: 4/10 only due to the gore.

tumblr_lt4b0engs11qbihfno3_500

Frankenweenie (or any Tim Burton movie!)

Ah, I do enjoy The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, but Frankenweenie is probably my favorite Burton film about a wiener dog who dies and his owner brings him back to life. I love it because of the kooky kids in it and the black and white reminds me of the old horror movies. Yes, this movie is in all back and white and it came out a few years ago!

Scare factor: 1/10

tumblr_mz8yqbmivp1qzkj9to1_500

Hocus Pocus

What’s Halloween without your favorite Sanderson sisters? If you haven’t watched Hocus Pocus, who are you!? We can’t be friends! I’m not even going to explain why this movie is awesome. Just go watch it and enjoy!

Scare factor: 1/10

Spooky Halloween Reads!

Even though I’m a huge fan of Halloween, I cannot read horror often! It scares the crap out of me. I can occasionally watch horror movies/shows, but reading is another story! Here’s a handful of the horror books I have read and actually enjoyed! Let me know if you’ve read any of these or what you recommend I read this Halloween!

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the anna-dressed-in-bloodmurderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas’s life.

Think Supernatural meets Ghost. This has a major creepy factor and there were times this book literally kept me up at night! If you like this one, there’s also a sequel!

we-are-many

For We Are Many by Stuart Thaman

No one believes Fletcher Lee when he says he sees someone lurking in the shadows. Removed from his middle school for frightening the other children, 13 year old Fletcher is forced into psychotherapy where his visions are believed to be the result of a traumatic childhood experience. Pressured into reliving his worst nightmares, Fletcher’s torments grow until they can no longer be written off as mere hallucinations. When Fletcher’s state deteriorates to the point of causing harm to his psychologist, Dr.Kendrick turns away from conventional medicine and discovers a much more troubling, supernatural answer. Without enough time to rescue Fletcher, Dr. Kendrick must make a choice: is she strong enough to risk her soul to find him?

I recommend this book for anyone above the age of 16, the author (my husband) won’t even sell this book to anyone under that age when he goes to book conventions because of some of the content. If you’re into psychological thriller, horror, this is your book. If you’re interested in getting a signed copy, go to his website and order. There’s a sequel in the works!

For the whole month of October, you can find the kindle edition on Amazon for ONLY 99 cents! What a deal!

You by Caroline Kepnes

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.41czqbs1jbl-_sx320_bo1204203200_

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

This was one of the first non-YA books I’ve read and I was very pleased with it. It’s like a train-wreck, you want to stop reading because the way Joe is makes you terrified and worried about the characters future, but you also want to keep reading because Joe has a sort of addicting personality. This thriller shows us the other side of a stalker story.

Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Katie’s got it pretty good. She’s a talented young chef, she runs a successful restaurant, and she has big plans to open an even better one. Then, all at once, progress on the new location bogs down, her charming ex-boyfriend pops up, her fling with another chef goes sour, and her best waitress gets badly hurt. And just like that, Katie’s life goes from pretty good to not so much. What she needs is a second chance. Everybody deserves one, after all—but they don’t come easy. Luckily for Katie, a mysterious girl appsecondsears in the middle of the night with simple instructions for a do-it-yourself do-over:

1. Write your mistake
2. Ingest one mushroom
3. Go to sleep
4. Wake anew

And just like that, all the bad stuff never happened, and Katie is given another chance to get things right. She’s also got a dresser drawer full of magical mushrooms—and an irresistible urge to make her life not just good, but perfect. Too bad it’s against the rules. But Katie doesn’t care about the rules—and she’s about to discover the
unintended consequences of the best intentions.

From the mind and pen behind the acclaimed Scott Pilgrim series comes a madcap new tale of existential angst, everyday obstacles, young love, and ancient spirits that’s sharp-witted and tenderhearted, whimsical and wise.

This graphic novel isn’t scary, but it does have a mysterious girl I would compare to a ghost. If you liked Scott Pilgrim and you’re looking for a not so scary read, this one is for you. You can even read it before bed time and not worry about having nightmares! 🙂

Getting my First Tattoo: The Healing Process

On September 17th, my husband and I decided to go out and get our first tattoos! We’ve both been wanting one for a long time but never knew what we wanted to permanently place on our bodies. Tattoos are forever people! Finally we decided to go with a tattoo to symbolize our marriage and religion, all in one. Along with our love for a band that brought us together as husband and wife. Our anniversary was in October (Halloween to be exact) and he had a huge thing of change saved up ($500) and decided the tattoos would be our anniversary gift to each other. We got them in September that way they would be healed by the time Halloween/Stuannaween came around. While researching and watching videos on tattoos and healing processes, I noticed I couldn’t find any videos or articles showing pictures of every healing stage of a tattoo. So I thought I would document my tattoo healing process for those of you getting your first tattoo too. I know every tattoo artist/shop has their own healing directions, but this is just what my artist told me to do.

I apologize for any possible gross descriptions and pictures, this is the body doing what it does!

unnamed-2

What does your tattoo mean?

Let’s start with the symbol, it’s an upside down broken pentagram from a band called Oh, Sleeper who me and my husband enjoy very much. The broken pentagram symbolizes the cutting off of the devils horns and the line tattooed above “… I am Forever” is from the song called ‘The Finisher’ where the band says ‘I’ll cut off your horns’. My husband has ‘I am the Finisher’ tattooed on his chest, so I got the ‘I am Forever’ on my tattoo. As for the Eph 5:14, that’s the bible passage the band got their name from! If you choose to know the passage, you can view it here. Arise Oh, Sleeper was also a hymn that was sang at our wedding! The whole tattoo ties together and is everything I wanted. The font was chosen from dafont.com that seems to be the choice site for tattoo artists.

What did the tattoo feel like? Was it painful?

This was the question I asked everyone I knew that had a tattoo before I went under the needle. What does a tattoo feel like? Well, I wish I could give you an answer but the pain varied from where she was on my thigh. Everyone told me it felt like either someone snapping a rubber band on you or cat scratches. In my personal experience, it felt more like someone pinching me with their fingernails and pulling the skin.

Getting the tattoo wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be. But remember, everyone’s pain tolerance is different and it depends on where you get the tattoo on your body. Since mine was on my thigh, there was a ton of meat and less bone so the pain was easily bearable. There were a few moments that I gritted my teeth and squeezed my eyes shut but for the most part it wasn’t too bad.

Would you get tattooed again?

Short answer: Yes!

Right when it was over, I honestly could have gone out for lunch and came back for another tattoo. Sadly, I’m poor and can’t spend all my money putting beautiful art on my body. I do have a few ideas for smaller tattoos that I want but I’m going to hold off for a year before jumping in again. I eventually want to get a quote in typewriter font, possibly a book related tattoo and in a few years, I plan on getting the Seal of Luther on my other thigh in color. I can see how tattoos become addicting…

Products I used to heal my tattoo along with the tattoo shops recommended healing process:

The Healing Process

Day 1: The tattoo wasn’t too painful since it’s on my thigh, but there were some spots that hurt really bad! Towards my inner thigh and the bottom of the tattoo where she got closer to bone and my skin pulled more. A clear wrap was placed over it and I was told to wear it for two days to keep all the blood and other bodily fluids in. I compared what it looked like to a package of ground beef with the blood at the bottom (gross I know!)

Night 1: More blood filled the surrounding area. Not too much but just enough. The next morning I actually changed the bandage because there was too much fluid in it. The tattoo artist recommends doing that in the shower but I recommend starting to pull the bandage off out of the shower. I personally got a bit woozy and had to sit down. Ripping a bandage off hurts! Possibly more than the tattoo!

img_5232

Night 3: I took my second bandage off and this is the picture after washing it in the shower. No unscented lotion yet. Tattoo area was very tender but there wasn’t any more bodily fluid coming out.

Day 5: A bit of redness, pain is very minimal. Color is starting to be lighter due to the healing process. I started using lotion the morning of day four and it eases the itch a little bit. I’ve been wearing dresses/skirts all week to work in order to not agitate the tattoo. img_5236Making sure to protect it at home when I’m around my cats! A slight scab is starting, so I’m assuming my body is trying to heal. The skin under the tattoo is (as best as I can describe it) perked up in that area.

Minimal peeling began in the afternoon so I rubbed more lotion on it. You can see some of the little black flakes. They came off once I washed it that night.

Day 6-8:

My tattoo began to itch a ton so I just started putting lotion on it whenever it was
unbearable. When washed in the shower, more of the scabunnamed-1 fell off until there were just a few pieces left. The tattoo had some grey on the side, but brightened up once the lotion was applied.

Day 9:

No more scabs! The tattoo is pretty much healed but I’ll be staying away from swimming and soaking it for a few more weeks just to be safe. I love my tattoo! There’s still comes flaking around the tattoo, so I just apply more lotion to it. unnamed

End of 2016 TBR

I can’t believe October is already here! This year flew by! We only have three months left of the year, that’s about 12 weeks of reading left to accomplish my Goodreads 2016 Reading Challenge! I’m ten books behind guys! My goal was to read 30 this year and I’ve only finished 12, I mean, that’s pretty impressive with the schedule I have.

I’ve decided I’m going to try and finish at least five books but I’m going to shoot for the following six. Nanowrimo is coming up next month and I really want to finish my own novel, so we’ll see what happens. There were a few months where I slacked off reading, I just couldn’t get into any of the books I had.

What books are you trying to finish before the year is up? How are you doing on your Goodreads Challenge? Add me on Goodreads so we can follow each other’s challenge progress and stay up to date on what we’re reading!

Blue Lily, Lily Blue

There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up.

Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The Raven Boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have untitledbecome hers, and her problems have become theirs.

The trick with found things though, is how easily they can be lost.

Friends can betray.
Mothers can disappear.
Visions can mislead.
Certainties can unravel.

I’m currently reading this one and I can honestly say that it’s my favorite one in the series so far. I’m supposed to be going to Books on the Banks this month and plan on getting Maggie to sign my Shivers series, and I’d like to have this series finished just in case she asks if I read/enjoyed it!

The Raven King

Nothing living is safe. Nothing dead is to be trusted.

For years, Gansey has been on a quest to find a lost king. One by one, he’s drawn others into this quest: Ronan, who steals from dreams; Adam, whose life is no longer his own; Noah, whose life is no longer a lie; and Blue, who loves Gansey… and is certain she is destined to kill him.71WosYU7Q8L

Now the endgame has begun. Dreams and nightmares are converging. Love and loss are inseparable. And the quest refuses to be pinned to a path.

Again, trying to finish these last two books in the series before I see Maggie again! Hoping this series ends better than a sad ending since we know one of the boys is going to die!

The Walking Dead Book 5

book five I started this one a few months ago, but honestly, I’m finding it hard to finish the comics when I’ve already seen the show. I do that with all books, which is why I still have never read Harry Potter.

Outcast Volume 1

NEW HORROR SERIES FROM THE WALKING DEAD CREATOR ROBERT KIRKMAN! Kyle outcastvol1_coverBarnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it. Collects OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #1-6.

My husband got me this for my birthday last month, so I figured it would make a good Halloween read! Can’t wait to see if I enjoy this comic series! Has anyone else read it?

Tuck Everlasting

Doomed to – or blessed with – eternal life after drinking from a magic spring, the Tuck family wanders about trying to live as inconspicuously and comfortably as they can. When ten-year-old 9781250059291Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret, the Tucks take her home and explain why living forever at one age is less a blessing that it might seem. Complications arise when Winnie is followed by a stranger who wants to market the spring water for a fortune.

This is one of those books where I watched the movie first and I loved the movie! Figured this would make a good cozy winter read. I’m trying to read a hand full of ‘classics’ every year now and this might be the perfect one. And holy crap, I didn’t realize how young the main character was supposed to be!

Bookishly Ever After

21018154.jpg

In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably a YA novel with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary.

But when Phoebe finds out that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her, she turns to her favorite books for advice. Phoebe overhauls her personality to become as awesome as her favorite heroines and win Dev’s heart. But if her plan fails, can she go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?

I already started this one, but so far it’s not as good as I thought it would be. This will probably be a book I choose to read after The Raven Boys series, just to relax and enjoy a good Contemporary YA.
