The Fill-In Boyfriend Book Review

Title: The Fill-In Boyfriend51bshpugrel__sx350_bo1204203200_

Author: Kasie West

Genre: Contemporary YA

Rating: 4/5 Stars

When Gia Montgomery’s boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she’d been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend—two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. After that, she can win back the real Bradley.

The problem is that days after prom, it’s not the real Bradley she’s thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn’t even know. But tracking him down doesn’t mean they’re done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favor and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend’s graduation party—three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies.

Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship.

Spoilers in this review!

Apparently, this wasn’t the first book that I’ve read by Kasie West but I was surprisingly pleased by this one. It was on sale for a few bucks on Kindle, so I got a copy without really knowing what it was about.

At first, I wasn’t a fan of Gia, but she grew on me… West did a great job with that. Though her friends were horrible, I really just wanted her to be done with them. I loved how West never really gave us a resolution with the end, but it still felt okay that her and her friends weren’t on good terms when the book ended. Gia was always just the girl who wanted to be perfect at everything, even being a girlfriend, but once Hayden came into the picture, things changed. She became a likeable character.

I’m a huge fan of ‘istalove’ in YA contemporary but that didn’t happen in this one. We don’t actually have Hayden and Gia get together until toward the end of the novel, to my surprise, I actually liked that and it was very realistic. There were times I wanted to punch Hayden and there were times that I thought he was THE most amazing (fictional) boyfriend that I’ve ever read. Seriously, he was so kind and compassionate, I assume he got that from living with his single mother and his younger sister. Hayden had my heart melting throughout this novel…

As for the real Bradley, I’m glad he only existed in two to three scenes, he seemed like a slimeball.

Gia’s parents really bothered me (as did her brother), her father was so passive about everything and her mother was a control freak, robot who wanted her kids to behave a certain way without expressing themselves. I really wanted to see Gia break down her mother’s walls toward the end, just a little bit more.

Fill-In Boyfriend now puts me 5 books ahead on my reading challenge! I think it’s going to be a great year of reading for me! If you’ve read any of Kasie West’s books, which one should I check out next?

Winter Book Haul

Every now and then, I’ll go on a book buying craze. I didn’t really do this before I started blogging. I would only buy one book, read it, shelve it, and then buy another. This winter though, I kept buying books. In my defense, most of them were on sale! I know exactly what happened, I was planning out my 2017 Goodreads Reading Challenge and I just wanted to go ahead and have them. So, here are the books I purchased starting in December and going through February.

How to Love by Katie Cotugno

I purchased this on my kindle and it was on sale for $4.99, what a deal, right?! I figured I loved her 99 Days, so I wanted to try her other novels. Very interested in reading this one this summer. Love me some Contemporary Romances. I ended up loving this one so much that I bought it in hardback too.

Oblivion by Kelly Creagh (Book 3 in Nevermore Series)

I already owned the first two books in this series, so I needed to complete the collection. I’m hoping to also get the whole set signed because I live near the author and she’s always doing local events. I’m planning on reading the whole series over because I read the first one a long time ago and don’t remember much of it. Just the cute emo boy, Varen Nethers!

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

This was my third attempt at a Hoover book and I loved it, my review was posted a few weeks back if you want to check it out! If you’re going to read a book by this author, this needs to be the one! So many twists!

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

I purchased this late in the game because the blurb didn’t strike my fancy but I love Sarah Dessen books so much! After I finished the Twilight series, I ran into Dessen’s books at the library and gobbled them up! Love her YA novels, obviously planning on reading this one over the summer.

Horror Coloring Book

This was a gift for Christmas from my husband. We love spooky things (we got married on Halloween, of course we love spooky things) and this is killer, pun intended. It’s my third adult coloring book and by far the most detailed. I admit though, I feel like a lunatic when I’m coloring blood on a zombie…

Metal Cats by Alexandra Crockett

Another Christmas gift from my husband. I love cats. I have three cats. I love tattooed musicians… thus, Metal Cats. It’s literally just a book of guys in metal bands with their kitties! So cute! It’s a great addition to my cat bathroom, yes, I have a cat themed bathroom with cat reading materials.

Peter Pan by JM Barrie

I already read this on Kindle, but I ended up running into this beautiful copy at Barnes and Noble for only $10. Hardback too! I’m not fond of the front cover, but the back is gorgeous! I love the quote in the silhouette of Peter. I also already have a review of this one up for your reading pleasure. By far my favorite classic book.

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

I purchased this on kindle because it was on sale for $1 and I really want to reread some of Dessen’s books. I believe this was one of the first books I ever read of hers. I prefer the old cover though, this one is kind of boring but I don’t have to look at it since it’s an e-book.

The Fill In Boyfriend by Kasie West

I got a email from GoodReads, saying this one was on sale for only $1.99 so I figured it was a great price on a kindle book. I wanted to read this years ago, but didn’t get around to it. Interested to see if I enjoy West’s writing.

Bitter Sweet Love by Michael Faudet

If you have a tumblr or instagram, you’ve probably read some of Michael Faudet’s poetry or Lang Leav’s. I really love their poems and I wanted to be sure to pick up Michael’s new one. Beware though, his poems are a little graphic– sexually. I love them.

Unashamed by Christine Caine

I saw a girl on my facebook post about this book and how ‘life-changing’ it was and I figured what the heck, I can’t spend my whole year reading YA and borderline erotica so I chose this one. I think I’m going to pick one non diction book a year to read and get myself amped up for life. Is that cheesy?

True (True Believers 1) by Erin McCarthy

Speaking of cheesy, this cover is super cheesy. My friend however, recommended this book and because she read the whole series in about a week or two, I figured it had to be good. Plus, I love having people to discuss books with! It’s also by a local author, set locally!

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

I saw the movie trailer for this and it looked amazing, so I’m totally going to read this before it comes out! It was actually $2 cheaper to buy the paperback than the kindle book.
