True by Erin McCarthy Book Review

Title: True (True Believers #1)17332551

Author: Erin McCarthy

Genre: New Adult

Overall Emotions: Gross…what… meh…

Rating: 2/5 Stars

When Rory Macintosh’s roommates find out that their studious and shy friend has never been with a guy, they decide that, as an act of kindness they’ll help her lose her virginity by hiring confident, tattooed bad boy Tyler Mann to do the job…unbeknownst to Rory.

Tyler knows he’s not good enough for Rory. She’s smart, doctor smart, while he’s barely scraping by at his EMT program, hoping to pull his younger brothers out of the hell their druggy mother has left them in. But he can’t resist taking up her roommates on an opportunity to get to know her better. There’s something about her honesty that keeps him coming back when he knows he shouldn’t…

Torn between common sense and desire, the two find themselves caught up in a passionate relationship. But when Tyler’s broken family threatens to destroy his future, and hers, Rory will need to decide whether to cut her ties to his risky world or follow her heart, no matter what the cost…

I’m always very cautious when stepping into the realm of new adult because the content is usually a bit out there. My friend recommended this one to me and she read it in about a day, followed by the rest of the series in a week. I, however, wasn’t too fond of this book, but I wanted to love it. The author is local to me, and the book is even set around University of Cincinnati, so everything that happens is logical, but I didn’t like reading it.

Here’s the thing, most of the time I was highly grossed out from Tyler’s chain smoking addiction. I wondered why Rory was attracted to him because the smoking really bothered me. If Tyler hadn’t been a stress smoker, I may have found him attractive but he’s now my least favorite book boyfriend.  I do think Rory was amazing at looking past all of Tyler’s family issues, but I didn’t understand why a girl like her would even be hanging out with friends like Jess who were doing drugs.

Speaking of Jess… I think I hated her more than Tyler’s pill addicted mother. I felt like she was never actually okay with Rory and Tyler being together (her and Tyler used to hook up), she just seemed to have this attitude throughout the book.

I don’t think I’ll continue this series, just because I didn’t fall in love with any of the characters.

I’ve never had good luck searching for a new adult book without all of the same troupes of bad boys in college. Any recommendations out there?

Winter Book Haul

Every now and then, I’ll go on a book buying craze. I didn’t really do this before I started blogging. I would only buy one book, read it, shelve it, and then buy another. This winter though, I kept buying books. In my defense, most of them were on sale! I know exactly what happened, I was planning out my 2017 Goodreads Reading Challenge and I just wanted to go ahead and have them. So, here are the books I purchased starting in December and going through February.

How to Love by Katie Cotugno

I purchased this on my kindle and it was on sale for $4.99, what a deal, right?! I figured I loved her 99 Days, so I wanted to try her other novels. Very interested in reading this one this summer. Love me some Contemporary Romances. I ended up loving this one so much that I bought it in hardback too.

Oblivion by Kelly Creagh (Book 3 in Nevermore Series)

I already owned the first two books in this series, so I needed to complete the collection. I’m hoping to also get the whole set signed because I live near the author and she’s always doing local events. I’m planning on reading the whole series over because I read the first one a long time ago and don’t remember much of it. Just the cute emo boy, Varen Nethers!

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

This was my third attempt at a Hoover book and I loved it, my review was posted a few weeks back if you want to check it out! If you’re going to read a book by this author, this needs to be the one! So many twists!

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

I purchased this late in the game because the blurb didn’t strike my fancy but I love Sarah Dessen books so much! After I finished the Twilight series, I ran into Dessen’s books at the library and gobbled them up! Love her YA novels, obviously planning on reading this one over the summer.

Horror Coloring Book

This was a gift for Christmas from my husband. We love spooky things (we got married on Halloween, of course we love spooky things) and this is killer, pun intended. It’s my third adult coloring book and by far the most detailed. I admit though, I feel like a lunatic when I’m coloring blood on a zombie…

Metal Cats by Alexandra Crockett

Another Christmas gift from my husband. I love cats. I have three cats. I love tattooed musicians… thus, Metal Cats. It’s literally just a book of guys in metal bands with their kitties! So cute! It’s a great addition to my cat bathroom, yes, I have a cat themed bathroom with cat reading materials.

Peter Pan by JM Barrie

I already read this on Kindle, but I ended up running into this beautiful copy at Barnes and Noble for only $10. Hardback too! I’m not fond of the front cover, but the back is gorgeous! I love the quote in the silhouette of Peter. I also already have a review of this one up for your reading pleasure. By far my favorite classic book.

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

I purchased this on kindle because it was on sale for $1 and I really want to reread some of Dessen’s books. I believe this was one of the first books I ever read of hers. I prefer the old cover though, this one is kind of boring but I don’t have to look at it since it’s an e-book.

The Fill In Boyfriend by Kasie West

I got a email from GoodReads, saying this one was on sale for only $1.99 so I figured it was a great price on a kindle book. I wanted to read this years ago, but didn’t get around to it. Interested to see if I enjoy West’s writing.

Bitter Sweet Love by Michael Faudet

If you have a tumblr or instagram, you’ve probably read some of Michael Faudet’s poetry or Lang Leav’s. I really love their poems and I wanted to be sure to pick up Michael’s new one. Beware though, his poems are a little graphic– sexually. I love them.

Unashamed by Christine Caine

I saw a girl on my facebook post about this book and how ‘life-changing’ it was and I figured what the heck, I can’t spend my whole year reading YA and borderline erotica so I chose this one. I think I’m going to pick one non diction book a year to read and get myself amped up for life. Is that cheesy?

True (True Believers 1) by Erin McCarthy

Speaking of cheesy, this cover is super cheesy. My friend however, recommended this book and because she read the whole series in about a week or two, I figured it had to be good. Plus, I love having people to discuss books with! It’s also by a local author, set locally!

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

I saw the movie trailer for this and it looked amazing, so I’m totally going to read this before it comes out! It was actually $2 cheaper to buy the paperback than the kindle book.
